Being held for four consecutive years, the Spring Festival Serial Cultural Experiencing Activities have become the brand project of the Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone. The event, composed of three themes——the “Beautiful China” Photo Exhibit, the Chinese Culture Display and the Art Performance, showed local people an open and inclusive China through demonstrating the extensive and profound Chinese culture from “Static & Dynamic” and “View & Experience”.

With hundreds of selected photos, the “Beautiful China” exhibited “Ancient Civilization”, “Ink Landscape”, “Modern China” and other themes to show visitors China’s civilization and history, rapid development and the fruitful achievements delivered by China-Africa cooperation in economy, culture and people-to-people exchanges. Stopping in front of display boards, local people appreciated and read them carefully and asked docents questions from time to time. Students from the University of Sierra Leone all marveled at the high speed rail, the FAST and other Chinese technological achievements. Looking at photos of China-Africa cooperation outcomes, President of the Affiliated High School of Fula College said excitedly, “I didn't know China had done so much for Africa until today. There were many people gathering in front of the Chinese culture booth to participate in cultural experience activities. The Confucius Institute teachers and volunteers in cheongsam were introducing the origins and customs of the Chinese Lunar New Year to the visitors to help them understand the traditional Chinese concepts such as family, reunion and harmony.

In front of the calligraphy exhibition stand, local people gave thumbs- up to the calligraphy works Spring is Everywhere by the teachers and were gasped in admiration for the wonderful Chinese characters. They tried to write Chinese characters with a writing brush and asked the teachers to give them some Chinese names to choose. A cute little boy took a writing brush and wrote the character “Spring” under the guidance of the teacher. He shouted with excitement, “I can write Chinese characters! Great!”

In front of the paper-cut art booth, adults and children were having fun with Chinese handicrafts through learning how to cut, fold and paste. The tea art performance area also attracted many people. They tasted various teas, such as black tea, green tea and flower tea. The entire venue was filled with the Spring Festival atmosphere of happiness, peace, and joy.

The art performances staged by teachers and students of the Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone pushed the event to a climax. Visitors enjoyed a feast for the eyes.

He Mingqing, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone, said that, on one hand, the Spring Festival Cultural Experience Activities could promote Chinese language and spread the excellent Chinese culture to local people in a fun way. On the other hand, it could take the opportunity to set up a communication platform between Chinese people and Sierra Leoneans to help more and more African friends to understand Chinese culture, enhance mutual cultural understanding and recognition, and build a bridge between the two peoples.
